Sight Words second_grade_sight_words.docx What are “sight words” and why is it important to learn them? An important part of reading is the acquisition of a sight word vocabulary. Meadowview School has an established list of sight words that are difficult to spell, high frequency words (that are found in reading and writing) and words that correspond with vocabulary that is found in grade level curriculum. It is important for young readers to learn to identify these words by sight. This means that they are not using decoding strategies (such as sounding out or “chunking” them) to figure these words out. Sight words are words that they know by sight, or automatically. A large sight word vocabulary increases fluency and allows a reader to concentrate on other words when reading. Getting Started: Your child should first learn the kindergarten and first grade sight word vocabulary. Most of them are posted on our Word Wall in the classroom. I will introduce 5 new second grade words each week. You will find the words I've introduced in our newsletter. |
